Celebrating Our Signatories

Since the Highland Charter for Climate, Nature & Health’s launch, it has enabled individuals, communities and organisations to commit to taking action which is positive for climate, nature and health in Highland. This action comes in different forms, some are taking their first steps towards becoming more sustainable by adopting measures like meal planning to reduce their food waste or sorting their home recycling and others have taken the opportunity to embed the Charter’s values right across their lifestyle, group or organisation. It is the culminative impact of these pledges which has influenced organisations across Highland to follow suit and we are pleased to see that Highlife Highland and the Highland Council have committed to the Charter.

Celebrating what our signatories achieve by implementing the action they pledge in signing the Charter is important to understand the impact that it is having in Highland. One of the Charter’s success stories is Leckmelm Estate, who committed to the charter in Spring 2025 and made a difference in their organisation throughout the year to successfully achieve their pledge. We are pleased to share the story of their impact.

To privilege the community and planet as part of our main purpose. Where possible to keep use of resources to a minimum, to reuse first and then recycle if an item can no longer be reused. To always consider a space and place for nature in our actions and to continue planting more native trees and hedgerows.
— Leckmelm Estate, Spring 2025

What was the impact of your pledge?

This year we planted some new willow hedges around the vegetable garden space and collected some native tree seedlings which we replanted in the shelterbelts. We have kept the consumption by the holiday cottage business low by upcycling recycling and buying new equipment where we can from charity shops.

Did you face any challenges in fulfilling your pledge?

Small scale tree planting is not easy now because deer fencing is so expensive.

We are thrilled that Leckmelm Estate has made their commitment to the Highland Charter for Climate, Nature & Health ongoing by renewing their pledge for another year.

You or your group/organisation can join the growing momentum of the Highland Charter for Climate, Nature & Health by signing the Charter. Explore our Signatories page to celebrate the work already being done across Highland and be inspired as to how you can take action too.
